On February 10th, PWC held our first annual Member Only event for 2021.
Laura Fiorvanti, Master Sommelier and Co-Founder of Corkbuzz (a PWC favorite) joined by Amber Rill, Assistant Beverage Director took us on a world tour through women in wine. Their motto is to acknowledge both women in wine and to make wine more accessible through education.
In Italy alone there are over 1,400 indigenous grapes derived from 20 wine producing unique regions, each with its own culture and food. There is a lot to learn!
Our tour started in Piedmont, Italy with an introduction to the Queen of Timo Rasso, Elisa Semino. Elisa, a 6th generation winemaker, owns and runs La Colombera together with her father and brother. It was here we enjoyed a ripe citrus, white peach glass of Derthona, harvested from the Timorasso grape.
During our stay in Italy, we were introduced to a few other notable women, Isabella Oderro and Arianna Occhipinti whose wines are known to be among the best of Sicily.
Next stop was France where wines are known for their style and quality; it is not possible to look past that famous yellow label trademarked in 1877, La Grande Dame. Madame Veuve Clicquot was the first woman to run a Champagne house.
In Rioja, Spain we were introduced to Maria Lopez de Heredia for a glass of Tondonia, a Tempranillo Blend with hints of crushed strawberries, red plum and dried herbs. Wine making traditions at this vineyard have remained since their founding more than 130 years ago. Grapes are hand harvested and wine aged in old American oak barrels.
Our tour concluded in Napa Valley, California. Here we were introduced to Cathy Corison, one of Napa Valley’s first female wine makers who runs an organically farmed vineyard.
It was an evening full of good wine shared with members both old and new. Delivery of wine to each attendee was organized by Corkbuzz.
Thank you to all who attended and to the event sponsor, Skanska.
